REALLY close?
Gwynn, .394, 1994 (a short season).
Brett, .390, 1980.
Carew, .388, 1977.
Williams himself, .388, 1957.

Besides Gwynn, Brett, and Carew, Ichiro and Todd Helton have batted .372. They are the two most recent players. I wouldnt be surprised to see Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder, or Hanley Ramirez come close within a few years. And to add to Gwynn's run for .400, his season was cut short because of a strike. Who knows what might have happened.

Tony Gwynn might have done it if there wasn't a strike in 1994, he was hitting .394.
