I have had the same fish for several years and not once have I had any babies born into the aquarium. Is it possible that the fish just became "friends" and prefer to just live together? (I'm sure that sounds awkward but who knows?) I currently have a 55 gal tank with 15 african cichlids, a 30 gal with 2 red tiger oscars and no babies!!

Sounds like they are packed in too tightly to breed, both of those tanks are way over stocked which certainly doesn't help with breeding efforts.

The africans might breed if you thin it down to about 6 of one species, depending on the species you pick. The Oscars need quite a bit more space and it's also doubtful you have lucked into a male and female that will breed together. They usually like to pick their own mates.

African cichlids are usually mouth breeders. You can Vent your fish if you know how to sex them or as the other individual told you the sames species are not the same color for male and female. Oscars like convicts will choose their mates and pair off. With mouth-brooders you will see and action called tumbling their babies watch to see which females or fish are not eating at meal time. Also what is you water parameters cichlids enjoy a high pH. They also lean toward being carnivores.or omnivores are they on the right diet. How often do you change your water? rearrange your aquascaping to see if babies are there and getting eaten.

heres what u do to get them to breed watch your tank closely and look for a pair of fish that have paired off and running other fish off from a certain area then find a bigger tank for tour oscars 30 gal is not big enough then put that pair in your 30 gal with a flat rock or a clean clay flower put on its side turn the heat up tp around 85 degrees and feed them very good brine shrimp works very good for breeding conditioning do a 25% water change every day with dechlorinated water and in around two weeks if you picked out a breeding pair you should see eggs then a week after they hatch start feeding the babies baby brine shrimp and they will grow like weeds after they get about dime size start feeding thoe crushed flake food along with baby brine shrimp

my africans have made a cave out of the rocks and gravel and are spawning right now......unfortunately it is a hybrid and wont be able to sell the fry but they did breed. they first need a place that they can make a safe litle cave and of course you need the opposite sex.

you may have a prob with trying to breed in your tank though. they wont breed if they are scared and those oscars are the reason for being scared. the oscars need to be moved to their own 55 gallon tank actually even bigger for teh oscars get huge.

so wat you would want to do right now is get the oscars out of that tank and add lots of reefs and plants and hidey holes...i use clay planter pots broken in half as my caves. they love it and they will put the rock and gravel where they see fit. with 15 africans you are more than likely to get a couple of breding pairs in there and hopefully a same type so you can get rid of teh fry.

They are probably the same sex. Most fish of the same species have different colors to signify different sex. I think you should take one of them to the aquarium to determine what sex it is, and then ask for an opposite sex to let them have Babies.

Have you made a good environment for them to breed? Rocks to hide under etc?

Water conditions have to be just right for breeding.
You have to be sure you have males and females.
You have to make sure they don't eat the eggs.

Do some more research.
