In 1888 Mexico was not using the $ sign on it's Pesos. The largest denomination then was a 20 Peso gold coin. 500 Peso's back then could buy have the country. So you must have a 500 peso's dated 1988. It is not uncommon for dates on coins to be hard to read. This coin KM# 529 is common and can usually be found in coins dealers world coin boxes for from.05 to .50 each. It is not silver, but copper-nickel which has a silver color. Some one already has written what is on the coin so no need for me to do the same. It is no longer legal tender in Mexico due to one of their many monetary reforms. The emblem of Mexico, the eagle and the snake in kind of a nice design. They too put dead people on their coins like the U.S.. It is a good start for a collection of Mexico or maybe a start for a one coin from each country collection. Hope I have helped some here.

I'm sure that you read the date wrongly. What you have is actually a copper-nickel Mexico 500 pesos coin dated 1988 that uses the old pesos unit before the revaluation in 1993. An 1888 $500 denomination coin would have been too big if made of silver. Your $500 pesos coin is now obsolete and not at par with the current Mexican money. In 1993, Mexico issued the "Nuevo pesos"(new pesos) in order to stem inflation, and the last two zeros were removed from the value. 500 old pesos was exchangeable to 5 new peso then.
Your $500 coin dated 1988 is valued at $0.50 in nice circulated to $2 in mint condition. It has a mintage of 230,000,000 and depicts Francisco Indalecio Madero on the reverse. He was a politician, writer and revolutionary who served as President of Mexico from 1911 to 1913.

I assume you mean 500 pesos? the current exchange rate for that is about $46, however since it's very old and made of silver, it's most likely worth $300-$600, depending on it's condition. I'm no coin expert though...
