The people who started things like Lime Wire and Kazaa figured we spent hundreds of dollars on our computers, then got programs then got printers and continually buy ink and stuff. We are constantly putting our hard earned cash into the computer industry and there isn't much solid return. So they figure if you were friends with a guy who had a CD or program or some such that you would be able to ask him to borrow it for a bit. In making peer to peer programs they invite people from all over the globe to share. Kind of like back in the day when I could buy a blank cassette tape and record whatever I wanted with no hassle from "THE MAN". All power to them to try and stop the sharing, Especially since some genious made a program to record stream.

LIMEWIRE just like napster was and Morpheus and other P2P sharing systems relies on ADVERTISING to nake money. When thousands or even MILLIONS of users start using a P2P (Peer to Peer) sharing program, several thousand per day may click on AD links and this generates a lot of traffic which the advertisers want. So the ad people pay Limewire for this traffic. When you click an ad link that shows up inside the Limewire window it generates an address that allows the advertiser to know where the traffic came from, so it helps Limewire to remain free.
Hope I didn't get too technical on ya!!! (grin)

its only free because of the spyware-- they like to call it advertising. Also, its peer to peer. If that term doesn't make sense, then let me put it in simple ideas... You download music from another computer with Limewire. Add 200,000 people and you have a network.
When you skip over that Terms of Service, it says that you cannot use it for downloading for copyrighted music/movies. obviously that is written to clear them of any lawsuits.

The shareware is free - but they would still like you to upgrade it and purchase the full version.
Its free because it's filesharing peer to peer
