Depends if they sign Mats Sundin or not. I'm of the opinion the Leafs would be better WITHOUT Sundin.
Hear me out here...you part with Sundin, Peca and O'Neill as free agents and release Pavel Kubina. If no other team claims Kubina and his 5 million, you send Kubina to the minors. Then Kubina's 5 million doesn't count against the cap.
Minus these players, the Leafs would be below the salary cap by 14 and a half million. Then they need to sign two centres, one winger and a defenceman.
Hard to say who they could get, but Daniel Briere and Ryan Smyth would be a great start. Maybe even Scott Gomez and Ladislav Nagy as 2nd choices. If they could get one of Briere or Gomez to sign, then a lesser centre like Chicago's Michal Handzus to round out the roster. Then maybe the Leafs can take a crack at one of Montreal's two free agent defencemen, Sheldon Souray or Andrei Markov to replace Kubina...
Problem is they are stuck with Raycroft and Justin Pogge for goaltending, and it may take a while for Pogge to develop. Raycroft is the 23rd-highest paid goalie in the NHL and guess what?
You get what you pay for.

80 2 wins isn't any quite that undesirable. Its merely the different communities are quite good. Im a San jose shark fan and they did ok this season, after being eliminated. The San jose sharks very last three hundred and sixty 5 days lost the first round in the playoffs. This three hundred and sixty 5 days to the third. So for the Maple Leafs Im no longer effective. Watch there preseason video games and spot what you imagine they are going to be. truly the more effective thanks to say it really is How good will the Toronto Maple Leafs Be next three hundred and sixty 5 days. No crew is undesirable it really is in hassle-free words the different communities are more effective!

Honestly, I think they need to get some vision first. They could have had Luongo for Steen and a pick. Instead they took Raycroft. Doesn't sound to me like they care much about improving product.
It may also be time to let Mats go to free up room under the cap for players who have a future.
I honestly don't understand why they get so little good young talent considering they mss the playoffs so often, they should have drafted a few winners by now.
I expect things to stay the same. I doubt it will change until the ownership is in the hands of a person who is there to have a winning team first and make money second.

The leafs have been plagued with problems throughout recorded history. They have always (OK not always but that was before I was born) had poor management. It also doesn't help that the media and fans create an atmosphere of impatience in T.O. I think they have to scrap this stupid idea that you can put together a bunch of spare part veteran players and come up with a playoff contender.
Build the team with draft picks and from the farm system and possibly some trades. Its not like they haven't had talented players, but many good ones they've traded. That means a few disappointing years; people are just going to have to accept that if they want a championship team in the future. At least that's my opinion.

I think we will be better. Even the same team minus major injuries to a fairly thin forward corps would make them better. Injuries to Tucker and Wellwood hurt, Peca's PK was missed and when Kaberle went down they couldnt win.
That being said they do need to make some improvements and the young players need to take steps forward, especially Steen. Calicavo needs to stay healthy too. Ian White was a nice suprise and if he can continue to develop the D looks good. Kubina can be better (though always overpaid), McCabe needs to be better. They need a real top line. If SUndin's there fine, but they need a real top line winger for him to play with. Raycroft was nearly as bad as the press made it sound. He wasn't good enough, but he's still young. And he had moments he looked great. He needs consistancy. SO, there are SO many question unanswered. Can they be better, absolutely, will they, I guess we can wait and see.

Get rid of Kubina, pay Sundin a little more and give more defense for Raycroft=Maple Leaf playoff opportunity. I think the Leafs have to work on defense to be better.

Honestly, the can't get much worse. They need to make a lot of improvements, such as;
1. younger players
2. better goalie
3. trade sundin for so someone worth their money - he might not be back anyways
I love the leafs, and no matter how sucky they are I will always cheer for them. They are just having a hard time playing in the new nhl, they need more speed and to get that they need younger players.

Worse! Their top scorer - no their top 5 scorers will be one year older and all the wrong side of 30. No one that can score 30 goals. AND several other Eastern teams are improving. Sundin hasn't scored less goals other than his rookie year, yet had twice as many shots as then. He is ready to retire.

If they make the right changes in the off-season (acquiring a good and consistant goal-scorer, a decent back-up, etc), I think they will be better.
And I'm sure you'll be getting plenty of dumb answers...
