PS3 and desktop running windwos XP pro connected to an 8 port 10/100 switch then to a cable modem
every time i go online with the desktop, the PS3 loses internet connection, and vice versa

the reason is because the switch can only allow one device to talk to your ISP via the modem at any one time. What you need to do is replace the switch with a router and everything will work great.
