Dirk is a lock. Remember, the votes were cast before the playoffs.

Further, the consensus developed around Dirk as MVP about 50 games into the season. As a result, a lot of voters will ignore the fact that his stats trailed off toward the end of the season.

Well, the NBA MVP voting process occurs right at the end of the regular season. Voting will be done by about 125 members of the media -- three from each of the 30 NBA cities and the rest a mix of national writers and broadcasters. A lot of people argue that the MVP balloting should be done AFTER the playoffs, but currently it does not because they want to make sure that great players on non-playoff teams get equal treatment. Having said that, Dirk's disappearing act in the playoffs is a powerful argument to wait until after the playoffs to vote.

In any case, because the voting happened before the playoffs, the likely winner will be Dirk. He was the best player on the best team. Yes, it's an argument we've been hearing for forever now, but he's the likely front runner.

First, playoffs don't apply to the MVP award. Second, as great as future hall of famer Steve Nash is, I think the voters will be somewhat hesitant to give him a 3rd straight MVP award. Third, I think Kobe did some amazing things this year, and he might win. My conclusion: Dirk was the best player on the best (regular season) team, and he will win the MVP.

no doubt that steve nash deserves to be the MVP than Dirk...Dallas lost to the warriors in the 1st round of the playoffs Dirk is the reason why they didn't make it to the 2nd round...
