Germany became a nation in the modern sense in 1871 when King William I of Prussia was proclaimed Emperor of Germany in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. This was following the German victory and occupation of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War. The south German states were annexed to the North German Federation led by Prussia. This was all the work of Otto von Bismarck, the prime minister of Prussia. Of couse Germany had existed for centuries. And German nationism had been strong at times, like during the Reformation. But it was weak and divided into hundreds of small political units. But 1871 changed that. I hope that this has been a help to you.
