We should and we DO.
The problem is in the TYPE of guns being bought. There is NO way an automatic or semi-automatic weapon has any valid purpose except to KILL PEOPLE. These are high powered fast expelling cartridges. So even if you are a bad shot, you get loads of tries.

Nobody should sell these, nobody should own them. Criminals always have, always will own the best guns available. Police need to keep up with the criminals.

In short, everyone should own a rifle, NOBODY should own an Uzi, Tech 9, AK-47, etc.

Absolutely. Law-abiding citizens of the United States have had that right for over two centuries, under the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Great Britain had to beg the United States government for "Lend-lease" firearms during WW2, and American sportsmen even willingly sent them many fine personal firearms to protect themselves from Adolph Hitler. Great Britain and the rest of the U.K. has again taken that right away from her citizens to the extent that no personal firearms larger than .22 caliber are allowed in England. Violent crime has flourished ever since, because the law-abiding citizens are not permitted under English law to defend themselves against criminals.

Hitler proudly proclaimed that Germany under the 3rd Reich was the first civilized country in the world where personal firearms were not necessary. Of course, the Jewish people never cared much for guns. The few who survived Hitler and his mob and made it to Israel gained a better understanding of the need for firearms. Most of those who live in America today still don't seem to understand.

If you have to ask... you may not have read the constitutions bill of rights, or understand why this nation has never been invaded since it's inception. Or why we may all still have a need, whether for sport or protection, to own, use or even just possess a firearm. Some people without even a thought, would freely give up that INALIENABLE right, failing to realize that they are also taking some one else's rights. Remember: T.V. propaganda weakens one's mind.

Your question sounds simple enough, but it's not--how does one define "a gun." Being part of a family of hunters and participants in competitive shooting sports, taking away the right to own rifles and shotguns is unthinkable. But I see no reason for anyone to own semi-automatic (assault) weapons. AND I am also a staunch advocate for right to carry/concealed weapons laws--it evens out the playing field.
