Any material that is not protected by a copy write. Copy writes are only good for so many years (50-100, depending) and once those years have passed the books or movies or music passes into what is called the public domain. Anyone can republish the material for free without gaining any ones permission. It is free and public material. While the copy write is enforce, whoever wants to use the material must pay for the privilege.

Public Domain means the copyrights have expired. In the case of a book, that happens 70 years after the author's death for material written after 1922. Songs are also in public domain after the same length of time. Pax - C

public domain is information that is open to the public for use. It is not copyrighted but may have some limitations for use. It is unrestricted in the sense that anyone can access the data without having to pay for or be a member of a site.
