is it normal to play air guitar when you're writing a song or thinking of a tune? how can i stop this?

There is no harm in playing air guitar, but if it distracts you and you want to stop, play a real guitar and listen to what you're playing. Probably what you're physically playing doesn't sound as good as the notes in your imagination (if it does, play a more difficult version of the same thing). This gets you out of your imagination and into the physical world, and in doing so it attaches a specific meaning to your air guitar hand movements. As with any behavior, when you make the behavior conscious, it's easier to control.
