Both or either. You can get there going west across the Pacific Ocean or going east across the Atlantic & then around the southern tip of Africa.

It depends whether you're on the Atlantic or Pacific coastline of South America. If you're on the eastern coastline, say in Argentina, than Australia is to the east. On the other hand, f you're on the western coastline, say in Peru than Australia is to the west.
