The brightest star in the sky is, of course, our own Sun. But if you mean the brightest star in the _night_ sky, that would be Sirius. Polaris, the North Star, is about the fortieth brightest star in the night sky.

Apart from the Sun, Sirius. Not the brightest in absolute terms, but the brightest as seen from here (brighter stars can be much further, so that is a matter of perspective).

The obvious answer is Sirius, which is the brightest star in the night sky.

The obvious trick answer is the Sun, because the Sun really is just a regular star seen very close up.
