The ideal is just past your maximum torque, in order to get max acceleration out of it.

You shouldn't be looking at your rev counter, you should be looking at the road - use your ears to guage when to change gear.

Mess around on some private land, see what works best for acceleration. Calculate mpgs on long journeys and conciously keep your revs at around a predetermined level to find the best for fuel efficiency.

If you learn how to operate your own car properly, you will automatically be that much safer on the roads.
