I would like to get away from using as much as possible on my lawn as well as not wanting to have to use much water but still keep a half decent lawn throughout the year. I read about native grass but not where to find it and if it can just be added to the lawn that I have to thicken it up.

Sounds like Buffalograss. It is drought-tolerant (i.e. doesn't die in a drought) but it does still get rather dried-out looking in drought. Doesn't end up looking much better than drought-stricken Bermuda grass does, though. Bermuda Grass goes summer-dormant in a drought but usually doesn't die either, unless you go straight from daily water to none at all. Rather than being weed-free, Buffalo is more like a good excuse for not treating with chemicals, because most weed chemicals made for regular turf will kill Buffalograss. If you want to try it, do an internet search on Yahoo! and you will find info and seed vendors.

I would check with your local hardware or garden center. They could help. Also check with local extension office.
