In days of yore, the only implements used for eating was the knife and fingers.

In time, it was considered barbaric to hold the meat with your hands while slicing it, hence the creation of the fork. However, these "barbarians" used the fork only to hold the meat while cutting with the knife and then continued to pick up the meat slices with their fingers to put into their mouth. So, since the knife was still the primary tool, it was placed to the right of the plate and held in the right hand during use while the fork was placed to the left of the plate and held in the left hand while holding the meat.

It wasn't until many years later that the fork was used to transfer the food to the mouth but its position on the left side of the plate was never changed.

The knife is on the right, the tool you would first use to cut the meat while stabilizing it with the fork. After cutting a few pieces, you'd place down the knife and then use the fork to eat.

When cutting food (e.g. steak, chicken, salad) you are to hold the fork with your left hand while holding the knife in your right hand. After the cut is made, then the fork should be returned to your right hand.

You are generally supposed to hold your fork in left hand and knife in right hand.
