I am a Senior Citizen and have never had a cell phone. I think I should have one. But would probably rarely (if ever) use it. What would be the cheapest way for me to go? I do not want monthly charges, maybe pay just for minutes.

A cell phone will be helpful in an emergency. Choose a prepaid plan that suits your needs.

As for the phone, choose one with a large screen and keys so you it's easier on you. There are 3 main form factors:

1. Clam shell. This is good because you don't accidentally press the keys while it is in your pocket.
2. Sliders. This is similar to the above. However you want to check that the mechanism is sturdy.
3. Candy bar. Most Nokia phones are of the candy bar design. From my own experience, it's easy to forget locking the keys and can result the phone dialling when keys are accidentally pressed. It can be embarrassing when your phone accidentally calls someone.

I recommend getting someone sturdy and cheap without the bells and whistles. Motorola Razr V3 are now selling quite cheaply. Made of metal, they are slim and quite sturdy. The screen is large and bright. They keys are also well spaced. I have fat fingers :-) which makes it hard to text on a smaller keypad. The phone comes with software so you can enter all your contacts on Outlook and then transfer it over to your phone. Saves you the pain of entering it on your phone.
