Try and find a copy of a track called Hands with a Hammer. It contains the hottest 4 minute drum solo by Terry Bozio I have ever heard (and I am a drum nut from way back).
If you can get a copy of Frank Zappa's You Cant Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 4 or 6 (its on one of them, second track second disk) it also contains a bit of a preamble by Bozio on the fact that Zappa worked him so hard in a concert that his hands felt like they had been bashed with a hammer (hence the name of the song...)

in a gadd da vida.....iron butterfly

Iron Butterfly is a U.S. hard rock and psychedelic band, best known for their 1968 hit "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". They are sometimes called "the first heavy metal band" because of this song and others like it. Their heyday was the late 1960s, but the band has been reincarnated several times with various members.

[edit] History
The band was formed in 1966 in San Diego and released their debut album, Heavy, in 1968, after signing a deal with ATCO, an Atlantic Records subsidiary. The original members were Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy, Jerry "The Bear" Penrod, Darryl DeLoach and Danny Weis. All but Ingle and Bushy left the band after recording the first album in late 1967; the remaining musicians, faced with the possibility of the record not being released, quickly found replacements in bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Erik Brann and resumed touring.

Weis and Penrod almost immediately went on to form the supergroup Rhinoceros.

The 17-minute "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", the title track of their second album, became a huge hit that spent over a year in the Top Ten. (Doug Ingle is reported to have said the title was an alcohol-slurred version of "In the Garden of Eden", although this is probably apocryphal; see the page on that song for more.) The members when In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was recorded were Doug Ingle (keyboards and vocals), Lee Dorman (bass guitar), Ron Bushy (drums) and Erik Brann, also Braunn (guitar).

The most defining drumbeat in music is "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. I never understood the infatuation with Neil Pert, he has technical skill, but he only shows that on his jazz records when he rocks a 5 piece. With Rush it's just a lot of flare and speed exercises, not style or the ability to carry a song. He isn't exactly a great drummer, he has just sold a lot of records and impressed a lot of layman. The funny thing is Phil Collins is a much better drummer but he never gets the credit. Unfortunately, a lot of drummers don't study theory so they lack the understanding of what a guy like Gadd, Buddy Rich or Dave Weckyl are doing. It's unfortunate.

That's Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra. The song is Skunky Funky, and it's a funky song with one of the coolest beats ever. It's off beat. Check out the rest of the samples from that album.

Also, almost anything by the band Eagles of Death Metal is really good. They're like a blend of AC/DC and Rolling Stone, more like the Rolling Stones. Not original, but still, it's just damn good rock n roll.

Since "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly has already been mentioned, I am forced to turn you onto an obscure song by Queen... "Dragon Attack" - Totally asskickin' drums and bass guitar, even if the lyrics are a bit silly.

Also "Dark Side of the Moon" The entire album (but "Time" especially)... some of the best drum solo stuff EVER.

For the godfather of percussion instruments check out Buddy Rich.

Good drums but not metal or anything? Yeah right. I am looking for a hot girl for smoking sex, but I don't want her to be too hot or the sex to be too good. What kind of questions are you really asking? Check out Drive like Jehu, Dethklok, and Mastodon from Atlanta Georgia. If you choose not to, why are you playing drums anyway?

Well, there are a few songs with good drums that I know of, but right now all that is comming to mind is Diecast. They are core metal, but they do have really fast drums.
