Yeah, I'm new at the whole competitive level of it, but I've been doing the strokes since I was little. 'Cept the butterfly, that's a killer! Any other useful tips are appreciated too.

Two muscles: Triceps and thighs. Triceps are used in all strokes to pull the water back and finish each stroke. Thighs are used to whip your kicks for breaststroke and helps more than any other leg muscle between the walls. Triceps can be worked by doing dips, weight lifts from behind your back to straight over your head, or using a triceps pull-down machine. Thighs are worked with squats and leg presses.
Your calf muscles are the other ones I'd consider working every time you lift/dry land because they help with your start speed and push-offs. This is the easiest one to do because you can do it anywhere. What I used to do was do 50 calf lifts (start on flat ground or a step and go from flat foot to tip toes) 3 or 4 times per day.

hello fellow swimmer cause cause i am 2!!!!!!!!
yeah... i agree with you on the butterfly
in order to improve that, you need to work out your abs more
keep your shoulder joints healthy to cause they will be of use in butterfly
swimming is a sport that works out all of your muscles, from your legs to your arms, from your brain to your heart, everything is working so there isn't really a particular muscle that you use the most in swimming
just eat healthy and keep your body in check

Good Luck!

In addition ot the bevy of answers above, work your core!!! Core workouts (abs, chest & back) are critical to imrpoving technique and increasing strength and balance. Plus they help you out in all reas of your life because your core gives you stability. Good answers from everyone though as well!!!

Good luck and keep up the hard work!

the best muscles to work out would be the pectoral muscles in your chest as well as the deltoideus muscles in your shoulder, and your latissimus dorsi muscles, which is in your back and sides... i think the most important would be pectorals because they would be able to provide the most power.
