Sounds like the indicator that determines if the lid is closed or not is stuck. Look around and see if you can find a button near the back left corner and push it a few times. The other solution may be that the load is too heavy and the machine won't operate.

Sometimes when you do heavy loads like towels more towels lean on one side of the tub causing an imbalance. Make sure all the towels are evenly distributed around the tub and the continue the cycle. Once the tub is back in balance it should go on again. If it goes on again and stops again, take some of the laundry out do two loads.

Sounds like the lid switch died. On Kenmore you pop the top and bypass the switch by putting the two wire together and don't forget to unplug first and tape the bare plug in ends. If the machine starts then replace the switch.

This is a guesstamate---either the belt that turns the inside of the machine is broken, or slipped off, or something maybe wrong with the motor.

start with the easy thing first, go check the circuit breaker or fuse that goes to your washer, then try all that other stuff everyone else is suggesting.
