You were 'loaned' the money, and you'll have to pay it back at some point. The best thing is to remove the debt and pay back the money. That way, if you need money again, they'll lend to you again.

Yes. If the person finds out that the book was free they may feel betrayed and never loan you anything again. I'd say morally it is the right thing to do :)

if the loan was strictly for paying for the book, then return it. (and if you're "not sure", don't come around here looking for a loan. that should be a no brainer.)

Well, it was a loan, so you should pay them back. But who's to say you can't buy a chocolate bar or something first, and pay them back later? I mean, it's up to you and whether you will be able to pay them back later.
