I would hope that faithful monogomous relationships are being held in higher regard. But it could also be the rapid increase in STD's. But when you look at the two both share commonalities. A safe relationship that you can value and feel secure in mind and body.

Only legal polygamy is rare;a lot of people practice polygamy each second in life but is not legal.
In modern societies, official polygamy will never be accepted. The supporters of plolygamy say monogamy is simply boring!

Monogamy was instituted for democratic reasons (for men) - to prevent the upper echelon of financially secure men from hording all the women. All this jazz about it being preferable for women is not true: from a survival standpoint, a women willing and capable of child-bearing would rather share resources from one rich man than go without or be without adequate resources to care for her children. (this is speaking strictly from a evo-sociological viewpoint) If polygamy is allowed, then the man with more resources will have more of the women (and children) leaving fewer for the men of less means. The concept of one man + one woman is to ensure every man gets an equal chance at procreating even if there is some other man with enough resources to care for several women (and children).
I'm not saying it's "wrong" or anything; in western society, one man + one woman works better for diversifying the gene pool as well as allowing anyone's family to "move up". In stratified societies, polygamy makes more sense as one's station in life cannnot be changed through progeny. In modern society, one can attain higher levels of resources and therefore afford more children thus monogamy makes perfect sense. Modern monogamous society also has an element of paternal involvement that polygamous societies do not; when a man has many wives, it is impractical that he be very involved in the upbringing of all of his children - especially emotionally. Since paternal/dual parental involvement has been shown to be very beneficial to children's welfare, monogamy has the added advantage of helping the children within the relationship become more emotionally stable as well as able to progress within society in a way that children of polygamous relationships do not.
Monogamy also is a result of the notion of unplanned committment based on emotional ties and mutually beneficial relations. Polygamy is generally based upon benefitting the male and possibly the family of the bride but not the bride herself. Generally, in polygamous societies of today, the bride has little or no say in the union itself. Of definite note is the fact that the bride's emotional connection to her groom is not a pertinent issue whatsoever in polygamous society.
Couples who engage in polygamy despite its taboo or illegal nature in modern post-industrial societies today do not do so in the same manner as polygamous relationships done in polygamous societies. Polygamous couples in modern societies generally do so for the benefit of sexual gratification and/or shared financial need, making the practice actually "polyamory" rather than "polygamy". Because the non-primary relationships are illegal or taboo, they cannot be sanctioned.
Such relationships generally have a heirarchy of relationships assumed to be agreed upon by all parties (not necessarily reality however) and thus the non-primary relationships are subject to dissolution at any time should the situation make the relationship difficult.
Thus, what people practice today, in monogamous societies is not polygamy, it is polyamory - multiple partners in sexual union, not necessarily multiple partners in life-long committed union.
