It's when during a war, like World War 2, some things that were in short supply were rationed. You were only allowed to buy a certain amount of things like butter, coffee, gasoline and so on. Not as much as you want like it is today.

Many items were rationed during WWII. Not just food but gasoline, tires, brass, nylons. Anything that was needed for war materiel productions was rationed so our troops could have products needed to fight the war ( like nylon for parachutes, brass for bullet casings, etc.)

Food was rationed also and many people tend to think in terms of food because it affected everyone down to the littlest kid.

This sacrifice made by my parents and grandparents is what gives them the right to the name " The greatest generation that ever lived"

I truly dont believe anyone would make that sacrifice nowadays or at least very few people would.Getting lumber was hard even after WWII because so much was used in the war effort. Many homes built right after WWII were made from wood taken from old buildings or barns.

It's where the government takes control of certain commodities, and issues them in such a way so that no one goes without.
During WW II this country rationed things like gasoline, rubber, bicycles, shoes, sugar, fruits and vegetables, fats and oils, cheese, coffee, butter, meats, fish, certain canned goods, and even dried peas and beans were among the many products rationed for all or part of the war.
People were issued books of "stamps" that entitled them to purchase these things, in limited quantities. For instance, stamp #17, from the "sugar book" entitled to one pair of shoes, and there were 3 stamps for a year. That meant three pairs of shoes, per person, for the year.

Its when things like food supplies get limited the government steps in and gives ecah household a certain amount of food/supplies. As opposed to just being able to buy as much as you want of certain things anyway.
