Mr.S pays his $875.00 a month for his 500ft apartment. His couch which covers up a lot of his living room is 4' x 9'. How much of his apartment floor space is covered by his couch? and how much is he paying for the floor space under it?

Quite Simple & Elementary.

Monthly Rent for 500 sq. ft. = $ 875

Monthly Rent for 1 sq.ft. = 875 divided by 500 = $1.75

Floor Area covered by the couch: 4' * 9 ' = 36 sq.ft.

Monthly Rent for 36 sq.ft. = 36 times $1.75

= $ 63. ANSWER.

4x9=36 sq ft.
36/500= 0.072 decimal fraction of the apt floor of 500 sq ft covered by the couch
$875x0.072 = $63 per month for the couch's floor space

find the surface area of the couch. then put 875 over 500 and put x over the surface area. then cross multiply. i will try to diagram it
