Ted Williams retired at the end of the 1960 season.
I found this box score from opening day 1960.
It does show the home run information as you described, just one year earlier than you remembered.

Williams opened his last season, 1960, with a home run off Washington's Camilio Pascual in his first time up on Opening Day, April 18. The homer was Boston's only run. Box: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1960/B04180WS11960.htm

(Boy howdy, now there's the sort of schedule we no longer see -- opening on April 18, one game in Washington, three at home against NY, three more back in Washington, one in NY, two in Baltimore -- just strange. And this is consecutive days, no apparent rainouts.)

Later Ted famously ended his career with a home run in his final at-bat, off Baltimore's Jack Fisher in Fenway, cutting the Orioles' lead by one to 4-3. The Sox manager had Ted take his place in left field in the top of the ninth, then immediately replaced him so the fans could have one last moment seeing him on the field -- it was Boston's last home game. Ted ran off the field and did not tip his cap. The Sox fought back in the bottom of the ninth and won, 5-4. Box: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1960/B09280BOS1960.htm

The Red Sox had three more to play in New York but Williams did not make the trip, choosing to end his career at home.
