Send it to me...I'll make sure it's spent right...I promise.
LOL...I'm just kidding, but that makes a good point. If you give your money to somebody and expect them to do some magic and make more money for you, then be prepared for disappointment. The best person to answer your question is you. The best person to ensure that the money is invested according to your wishes...is you.
Now, you can get advice, but Yahoo Answers is probably not the best place. It's time to hit the books and do some research. What interests you? 12,000 is not a lot to start a business, but you can definitely look at some of the ones that do not require an actual storefront, such as an ebay store or something similar. Just remember, that each type of business has its own ups and downs and you will get out of it what you put into it (in terms of time and dedication, not just money). Try the two links below to get some ideas. Or, look for a need in your community and fill it.

Do what I did. Start an online business that has no start up fees. Many people choose to go with eBay but that still requires money to start the venture. Have you ever heard of MoreNiche? It's what I do and it's very cool and a lot of fun. Mind you, it does require hard work but the payout is good. The best part is that you don't have to pay to join, they will actual pay you to become a member ($15 I think if memory serves me correctly). It isn't a lot of money but the true payout comes when you become a member. Good luck!

First, figure out what business you would LIKE to do, and only then think about how to fund it.
