My fuel is running to rich. Could I turn the screw on my carb down to lessen the ammount of fuel it gets?

The mixture screw only affects from idle to 1/4 throttle opening.
Check the air cleaner. Clean if necessary.
Check the cylinder compression. If the rings are worn, crankcase oil will be forced into the combustion chamber and foul the spark plug.
Carburetors on single cylinder engines don't go out of adjustment.
Your bike is old enough that it might need valve guide seals.

If you haven't done any changes to the intake, exhaust or engine on the bike, then stock jetting is correct for this model.

If it's running rich, there is a reason for it, you'll need to find the reason and fix it - leaning out the carb will not be the answer.

The carb on this bike was notorious for wearing out the float valve. This makes the bike act like it's running rich and 'loads up' until you get to full throttle, when it 'cleans out' and runs normally.

Check out the exploded diagram of your carburetor here http://www.yamahaoftroy.com/fiche_section_detail.asp to see the part I'm talking about (it's #2).

If you are comfortable working carefully with really small parts, you can remove the float bowl of the carburetor and look at the float valve. If you see a wear ring around the valve (the part that's pressed into the carb bowl body), or on the needle (the floating part), then they need to be replaced.

If you are not sure you can work with parts that are the size of a pin head, and get them back together correctly, you can take the bike to a mechanic.
