I have a self-cleaning oven at home, but there are no instructions (we recently bought the house complete with appliances but the previous owners did not leave manuals). Do I just turn the knob to "auto self clean" or is there more to this process?

Remove the racks. There may be a lock or latch (similar to dishwasher) on the front, lock it. Turn the knob to clean. Depending on how dirty your oven is, you may want to leave the house after the cleaning cycle is over. Sometimes it can smell really bad. Don't leave while it's running! Once the oven has cooled, look at the floor of the oven. There may be some carbon from the cleaning process. Just wipe this out with a damp towel or sponge.

Get a foil oven liner from the grocery store to protect your oven floor from future spills.

Depending on your stove, there may be a button that says self clean or a knob you have to switch. All you have to do is make sure the oven has nothing in it (no baking sheets, etc) and turn on self clean. Most ovens will lock, and will heat up to a high temperature. Some will beep when you're done. It's a great feature to have, and a lot easier than cleaning it yourself! Make sure you look up your oven make/model online - you might be able to find a user manual that will give you more detailed instructions.

yes lock the oven and turn the knob to auto but make sure it is when you can be around the house and have the windows open because they do smell bad when they are cleaning you may want to do this as you are out in the garden or mowing

Remove the steel racks inside. Some have a sliding metal door that needs to be pulled up to protect the glass. Most don't have this, but some do. Check and see if yours has this feature. Let it go through the cycle. The door will remain locked after the cycle until it cools down to a safe themp.
Then wipe out the remaining dust and you're good to go.

On most self-cleaning ovens, you must also set the timer for how many hours you want it to clean! Also, you need to "lock" the oven.

Have you searched the web for a manual for your oven?
