Pap smears are quick and painless when the doctor uses a spatula. Ask if that's what your doctor uses.
Sometimes a doctor will use a cyto brush with can irritate causing some pain to the area during and afterwards, although, this is a more thorough method.
Since this is your first pap, and only if you have no questionable symptoms, or high risk for cancer, then ask that your first pap they use the spatula. I found (in my experience) that doctors don't use the cyto brush often.
Remember, that you have your rights as a patient to refuse treatment there, and can go anywhere else, I mean, come on... who wouldn't understand that it's your first time getting a pap anyway. It's normal to be nervous. I still sometimes get nervous.
Word of advice, try to stay relaxed during the procedure. It doesn't really take that long (couple minutes). Just think to yourself, at least it doesn't take an hour and will be over any second! And, that you're not alone!
About your birth control, if your not good at taking pills, try the shot. Either of those two, I highly recommend for the highest effect! Accidents (surprise pregnancies) are even scarier than a pap, that's for sure!
I hope I helped you. I'm sure you'll be strong, and do good. I look up to you for being so responsible!

I know you are worried. We all are the first time. The worst part of it is feeling the cold metal forcepts. It doesn't hurt, it is just cold. You will only feel a small pinch when the actual pap smear is done. By the time you feel the tiny pinch, it is over. So there's no need for worry.
As for the best method of birth control, I personally recommend the diaphram. This way you have no health issues connected (only unless you do not take it out and cleanse it and yourself- thus causing infection). The diaphram is an oval shaped rubbery feeling device that you put a small amount of speracide in and then insert it inside yourself over the mouth of the uterus. You can then leave it in for up to 2 days/nights at a time no matter how many times you have sexual intercourse. It is 99% effective just as the pill and other birth controls. You do not even feel it there and he won't feel it either. And do not worry, there is no slimmy or sticky feeling from the speracide cream used inside the diaphram. This is easy, effective and like I said, no worry of any physical/health damage as with many other birth controls.
Should you decide to go with getting a diaphram, your doctor will do the pap smear and then you will have to be "fitted" for your diaphram. This will only involve the doctor using a disposable one to find out which size will fit you best. You will should be able to get your diaphram and spermacide cream that same day there or through prescription.

Sweety we/I can't recommend a prescription on birth control, as women are different, in all of us, oestrogen level height, weight, bone structure, metabolism, etc. It is all these that r Dr. take into consider before. And by form I can surmise
that it will be a pill but this is what you & him will discuss. Have u ever had a pap test before? Just in case I'll summeriz
it for u? You lay on a stretcher with r butt to the end and r legs r bent at the knee and feet placed in stirrups. Once the Dr.'s ready he'll put in a lubricated steel device that will open once inside of you "this is the MOST uncomfortable part of the procedure" however, if you tense up it will make it worse! Sing, think of something pleasant, count the blocks on the ceiling, but relax down there, he'll swab it, pull it out & done!
Just relax take deep breaths, but don't tense up or it'll hurt worse, as for the birth control, I'm almost certain it'll be in a pill form, what kind I don't know? But keep your chin up and I hope the pill is what you want?
All the Best of Luck to You & Take Good Care!

Hello. Do not be worried about your first pap smear. It is quick & virtually painless. Request a female OBGYN and let her know it is your first pelvic exam. A good doctor will tell you exactly what they are doing as they procede, so there is no awkward silence or confusion. Sometimes they put posters on the ceilings, so you can focus on something else. It is important to stay healthy, and if you want an Rx for the pill, you will need an annual pap test.
I was put on Ortho-Tricylene when I was 18. At age 20, I switched to Ortho-Tricyclene-Lo because the side effects of regular ortho were too strong. I am now 23 and still on ortho-lo. It has the lowest amount of hormones(estrogen and progestrone) & the least amount of side effects. Also, the pill has been pefected for decades while patches, shots, and IUDs have many more reported serious side effects. If you are sexually active do more than condoms. Also get tested for STDs and HIV.
It is best to talk with your doctor about available options and what works best for you. I was orginally put on the pill for its hormone regulation reasons and later I used it for birth control.
I hope this helped as a big sister might. Good Luck. :)

Ah the joys of being female. I am 38 years old and if theres anything Ive learned its just relax. A pap is not painful but it can be a little uncomfortable. Just relax and you'll be fine. And dont forget that now you get to have one every year for the rest of your life. As far as birth control the pill always did fine for me. And by the way the pap test last about 5 minutes.

A womans health is VERY important. Its okay to be scared, but a good doctor will explain everything they are doing so that should ease some anxiety. Please ask your doctor about getting the vaccine for HPV. Its not a cure all for cervical cancer but it could lessen your chance consideribly. As far a birth control goes, you need to choose whatever is most comfortable for you. If you are forgetful, ask for the depo shot. You just go in every 3 months and get poked in the arm. Very simple. Since this is your first pap, I am assuming you are a teenager, so I wouldnt get too crazy about all the different varieties of birth control. Stay with something simple. You'll do just fine :o)

You don't need to be worried about your first PAP. It shouldn't hurt but it can be uncomfortable and just a little embarrassing. It sounds hard to do but I remember my sister telling me to just try to relax and not to hold my breath. That made it a little easier.
As for which pills you should take, I'd let your Dr. determine that. Tell her about your life style, like if you're prone to cramps or heavy bleeding, she will be able to recommend one that will work best for you.
Good luck and don't be scared! We all have to go through it.

Don't be worried. Its really good that you're going b/c any woman who is sexually active should always go for regular visits. And when you talk to your doctor, he/she will probably figure out what's the best form of birth control for your lifestyle. I personally recommend the pill, but you can probably explore other options with your doctor like the patch, condoms, etc.

No need to worry. It is a little uncomfortable, but should not be painful. Also, birth control varies widely. Talk it over with your doctor and choose the one that best suits your lifestyle. Also, know that you may have to try a few different birth control types/dosages, etc. until you find what works for you. Good luck and good job on taking care of you!
