It is gleaned from records and writings of the times who witnessed it. True, it was often recorded and written about by the winners as one answerer said, but that does not invalidate what happened.

History is written by the winners.

Winners of what?

Wars, incursions, invasions, etc.

What version of "history" would Cheney or Bush have about Bush's Illegal War in Iraq? Certainly much different than the one written by Iraqis.

History of the christian era--as written by the only people allowed to read or write in the dark and middle ages--is a LOT different than the history written by the Ottoman Empire, which is different from the Arabic version of events, which is different from the Nordic version of events. It's all perspective, and you need to take what was written with a grain of salt and a large measure of critical thinking.

Listening to a program last night about historical events from a biblical perspective vs a secular perspective is drastically different. Belief vs politics vs first-hand accounts of what occurred makes for interesting and lively debates.
