Can you imagine if Bill Clinton or George Bush said this? What do you suppose would happen????

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
-Teddy Roosevelt, 1907

I already posed this musing in another question of mine. I asked Y! Users in here if there's any difference between what Bush is doing now and what TR was doing in his day. The general conclusion was that they weren't all that different at all. If Bush said that 100 years ago, everyone would worship him like a god. If TR said that NOW, he'd get stoned to death.

Who's right in this case; the president who's strong in his beliefs, or the collective consciousness of the American people?

If they said that then I'm sure they'd be another riot like last week in LA at Macarthur Park. "The times they are a changin."- Bob Dylan, I'm sure no one in their right mind would say something like this now a days (well I could think of a certain Ka Ka Club). The times were different back then. We've come a long way and we still have a lot to go through.

I think he's already said that... Not in those exact words, but you get the gist. You have to basically "become an American" to become a legal immigrant here (read the pledge of allegiance, learn English, etc) anyways.. People are shocked about what Teddy said, but Bush has started a war and done so many horrible things and all we can do is find something bad someone who's dead said... pity.

That quote's taken totally out of context here, you know that, right? Anyway, it's a hundred years old. A lot has changed in the public conciousness since then. If a president said that no one in America could have dual citizenship (or that citizenship was guaranteed if previous citizenship in a foreign country was relinquished), then he would get boo-ed away from the podium.

i might say that's undemanding for every person persons to take a seat down and be sure from this area of the communicate. no longer one persons keen to grant our opinion has been in his footwear and had to make the techniques he has had to make. i hit upon it no longer hassle-free to have faith that every person American might pick to be in a position the place they might desire to make the varieties of judgements he has had to make. And he has had to cause them to. keep in mind 911 - anybody became yelling for war then. Suddam might desire to have been taken out of powere an prolonged time past to Bush Jr. I provide him the credit for certainly doing it. are you able to think of having a frontrunner of your united states who condones raping ladies for recreation or how approximately killing toddlers (toddlers on their tri-cycles of their front backyard) with a poinsonous gasoline that the rustic's chief ordered to be sprayed in the process the city killing anybody in touch? How some chief so terrified of his very own shawdow that he murders somebody who has been rumored to attempt and overthrow him. My counsel comes from documentariers that I even have seen on PBS - write to them and ask in case you doubt what i'm saying is authentic. I hate seeing our people killed. yet, they are protecting the U. S. and Iraq. Whethor any information station will rfile it or no longer, Saddam has been attempting to connect the terrorist ranks against the U. S. for truly it sluggish and it became purely a question of time earlier he succeeded. yet i assume shall we take a seat lower back and anticipate the subsequent attack - and then pass after Bush lower back for doing no longer something. the guy is damned if he does and damned if he would not. i understand i do no longer envy his place and the techniques he has had to make in the time of his presidency. Do every person of you truly have faith that he's so heartless and uncaring that his methods are approximately no longer something different than own benefit? Or is that the variety you may manage the region in case you had the possibility - i actually wish no longer. If I met him, i might tell him that i think he's doing the ideal job that he knows of ways, it truly is all every person can assume from anybody.

In other words--"in America you're only entitled to freedom if you live and think exactly the wa I tell you to do." Were you under any illusion TR was anything but a right-wing bigot? H~ll, he ought to be the patron saint o fthe neocons.

They'd have the backing of the American people where immigration is concerned.

Of course he also didn't have to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants, which is the main cause of the immigration turmoil.

I agree with President Teddy's words 100%.
