Most people buy into the idea that hey, it's a woman's body, a man will never know what the decision is like, on the basic question decided in Roe, should a woman in the 1st trimester be making the decision or should the state get involved, it ought not to be the state.
But over time the Left has pushed beyond this. They've opposed parental notification. They've opposed making certain information available to the women making the decision. They've opposed bans on partial birth abortion and because they interpreted 'health' to mean 'emotional health' thereby eliminating the limits placed in the original law, forced the S. Court's hand in approving a change to the woman's 'life.'
All to try to push the wall further - but has it backfired?
Have the radical positions taken by NOW and NARAL on parental notification etc. pushed people away from their side on the basic issue of abortion rights?
By pushing so far have they lost popular support for what they already had?

Like I said - most people believe a woman should have the right to an abortion, assuming early on, etc... But fewer people seem to vote on that issue anymore - - - if you ask me, for example, I'll say yes, it ought to be a woman's right, but I'm not going to vote on the issue - I'll take a tax-cutting pro-lifer over a tax-raising pro-choicer even though in a perfect world I'd prefer a tax-cutting pro-choicer. And part of the reason is that the pro-choice advocacy groups have gone way beyond pro-choice - they seem to want to have their cake and eat it too - to want not only the right but the ability to misuse it. The characterizations the Right used to make about NOW and NARAL wanting abortion on demand or as birth control, NOW and NARAL seem to live up to that, they're so extreme now on common sense limits like the partial-birth ban that I don't care if they lose on the core issue. A lot of the people who answer 'pro-choice' in a poll aren't voting based on that issue anymore.

Well Jay now you can't have it both ways - it's your choice but once you've made it there are consequences - if you've decided to have the baby then that doesn't mean that just because it was your choice to begin with, you have the right to go to the local tavern and knock back a bottle of Tequila and give your baby a brain disorder!
Jeez - it's your choice whether to buy a dog from the dog pound that will otherwise put it to sleep but that doesn't give you the right to beat it once you bring it home!

The public is split with respect to late-term abortion, see:
http://www.pollingreport.com/abortion.htm
NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll conducted by the polling organizations of Peter Hart (D) and Neil Newhouse (R). April 20-23, 2007. N=1,004 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3.1 (for all adults).
"As you may know, the Supreme Court recently upheld a law that makes the procedure commonly known as a partial birth abortion illegal. A partial-birth abortion is a procedure performed in the late-term of pregnancy, when in some cases the baby is old enough to survive on its own outside the womb. The court's ruling outlaws using this procedure, and does not make an exception for the health of the mother. Do you favor or oppose this ruling by the Supreme Court?" Half sample, MoE ± 4.4 (Form B)
Favor 47%
Oppose 43%
Unsure 10%
About other types of abortion, the majority of the public favors them, as you see in those polls.
So it's untrue that the public has been pushed into the religious right agenda. What is true is that the right wing SCotUS is making decisions that are not supported by a majority.

Maybe modern medical advancements have changed people's minds about when "life" begins...Also, medical breakthroughs have made premature babies viable earlier and earlier. Keep in mind as well that being an unmarried mother doesn't hold the same reputation as it once did either. Fewer abortions are happening. Less people are having 'unwanted' pregnancies and fewer of those are *choosing* abortion as a solution.
You give a lot of credit to these "pro choice" folks, when it may actually just BE a change in public opinion on the issue.

The true hypocrisy? There are numerous states that have enacted laws regarding substance abuse with regards to a pregnant woman. "In Wisconsin, an expectant woman can be taken into custody if police believe her abuse of alcohol may harm her unborn child. In South Dakota, pregnant alcohol and drug users can be committed to treatment centers for up to nine months." By and large over 20 states have enacted laws targetting women for there actions during pregnancy. My question is if "it's a woman's body" (the excuse many pro-abortionists claim) how can the LAW charge you for a crime to your own body? That's right you're talking about fetal rights. If fetus have rights in this respect isn't it hypocritical to take them away in the next situation simply because your talking about abortion?

To answer your question: No. The extreme left has nothing on the extreme right. If anything, between the 2 extremes, the right has had a bigger impact on pushing people towards the left. You can thank the entire govt., fox news, ann coulter, jerry falwell, christians, etc.

In many cases, those reasonable-sounding proposals were actually designed to restrict abortion.
But you're right - NARAL does oppose reasonable restrictions sometimes. They're almost as bad as the NRA.

I'm not sure if they've lost all support, or if so many people are like me, and don't feel radically either way. When ANY group gets to the fanatical/radical point...people stop listening.

Despite what anti-abortion activists and politicians would have you believe, the majority of Americans continue to support a woman’s right to a legal abortion.
