rethink it as an exponential equation. remember the log is the exponent.

log[5] x = -3 means 5^(-3) = x, so x = 1/125

If this is a log base 10 then you:

10^log5x = 10^-3

(10^log cancels each other out because they are opposites)

5x = 0.001

x = 0.0002

log(5x) = -3

log(5x) = log(10^(-3))

5x = 10^(-3)

x = 10^(-3) / 5

x = 2x10^(-4) = 0.0002
