I called and they told me my doctor had to call and verify that I meet certain criteria. Doesn't loosing 100lbs+ qualify me? I am only concerned with the hanging abdominal skin that weighs about 15-25 lbs, and I want it removed! The whole purpose of my surgery was to get healthy, not carry to around a massive amount of redundant skin!

First of all, good for you!

Secondly, it really depends on your insurance company and whether or not the bariatric surgery was for health or "vanity" reasons. Your doctor DOES need to call and explain the whole situation to them, no matter what. Insurance companies never take anything at face value...they need as much "information" as possible before helping. Jerks.

your insurance should cover your bariatric surgery. if your obesity was life threatening. but a tummy tuck. they very rarely cover. the companies feel that the tuck is for vanity purposes and not for health reasons. unfortunately. since they are sooo very expensive. look up some plastic surgeons in your area and see if they will do some work for you at a discounted rate. especially if you offer to be their spokes person. you know, if someone wants to have their tummy done they can call you and you can tell them how it was. most doctors will try and work with you. good luck, and congrats!

I'm sorry if you think this is rude, but I do not believe that insurance should cover the tummy tuck. I believe that insurance is there to pay for things to keep you healthy. Redundant skin as you put it, isn't keeping you from being healthy. It was your choice to have the bariatric surgery and you should be responsible for having the tummy tuck done.

Well, you're probably not gonna like this answer, but, SORRY! Personally, I believe that gastric bypass shouldn't be covered by insurance/medicaid, etc as it wasn't the company's fault you were overweight and therefore, why should others have to help pay the costs of your mistakes to be taken care of. I mean, insurance rates within in group coverage are based upon the number of claims and dollar amounts prviously filed within that group. Therefore, when you submit this claim to the insurance and it raises the overall paid benefit amounts $X, you , as well as the rest of the group covered will be subjected to rate increases. Myself, I think it's selfish and jsut a way to "milk the system". Take some responsibility for your own actions.

When I had my Gastric Bypass our insurance would only cover the tummy tuck if you had to have a hernia surgery.

Personally, I think you are being a little pathetic.
1st, you cannot quit shoving food in your mouth and require a major surgery to keep yourself from eating because you dont have the will power to do it on your own.
This is the same reason smokers have a harder time getting insurance. They want to smoke themselves to death and then expect the insurance to pay for nebulizers and metered dose inhalers. Its an increadibly expensive venture.
You want your insurance to pay for your tummy tuck because you had a very bad habit.
I imagine all the other people who are share the same insurance would rather you pay for it on your own.
Think of it this way. All the groceries you are not buying anymore can pay for a tummy tuck. Just sock it away and pay for it yourself.
