Roger Conner (1880-97) had 138 homers in his career. Ruth surpassed him during the 1921 season, extended the mark another 575 times, and held that until Aaron in early 1974.

Babe broke the record in 1919 with 29 bombs. He hit 54 in 1920 after the sale to the yankees, Cards fan, can't capitalize yanks. He broke his own record 2 more times, once in 1921 when he hit 59 and six years later, the year my dad was born by the way, 1927 with 60.
BTW, it was Frank "Home Run" Baker.
Baker lead, or tied for the league lead in homers four consecutive seasons (1911-14), although 12 was his top total. Baker earned his memorable nickname in the 1911 World Series, when he hit game-winning home runs on successive days against the Giants' future Hall of Fame pitchers Rube Marquard and Christy Mathewson.

I don't recall the total but The Babe broke his own record. On second thought, it had to have been 59 because even if the preceding seasonal record was 50 he would have broken it every time he hit a HR after he matched the 50.
