You could still go quite awhile. I walked around dilated at 3 cm for weeks. I was about 40% effaced. You could go rather quickly or still have a bit to go.
A couple signs to look for:
1. If you are having more than 6 contractions an hour
2. Your water breaks or you have any sort of clear drainage.
3. If your water breaks, look for a dark green discharge with it, it could be meconium and your nurse/doctors will need to know about it.
4. Take it easy and drink plenty of water.
If you really are anxious and want to have this baby, walk around. Don't over exert yourself, but just walk around, stay hydrated and have fun!
Good luck and congratulations!

At 39 weeks and 6 days I was 2cms dilated too :) Four hours after the midwife told me that I was at the Maternity Unit, I was 4cm dilated and that's the point at which UK midwives class you as being in active labour - it's also the point at which they admit you to the delivery suite. It could be a matter of hours, it could be days, it could be another couple of weeks. I know that answer is rubbish, but nobody knows sadly. The fact you're having contractions is a good sign. And I get what you mean by your breasts. Is it when the midwife felt the top of your bump, she could only get on finger between the top of your bump and the bottom of your breasts? And then afterwards two fingers, meaning baby had moved down? Because that's another excellent sign. I can't tell you when your labour will start but it will be soon enough from the sounds. Use the chance to make sure all your bags are ready, that your maternity notes are always handy, and that you have everything you need. My biggest advice is to get some sleep! I was awake for 36 hours straight when I took my labour. There are a couple of things that might help things along, they won't bring on labour unless your body is ready for labour but it can't hurt. Have yourself some walks too as gravity will help baby's head push down on your cervix which encourages it to open more, just don't do too much and wear yourself out. One last option is to have a bit of intimate time with your partner, sperm contains prostaglandins which encourage the cervix to soften - if you ever go overdue, the hospital will try using a prostaglandin to induce you. Even if you don't fancy that, just an orgasm is good for helping labour along as it releases the hormone oxytocin which is one of the labour hormones.

It could be hours or days. I heard of a woman in a similar situation that took about 2 weeks before she delivered. However, at 36 weeks, I was only 1 cm dilated and about 50% effaced and the baby came two days later. Watch for other signs such as losing your mucus plug or contractions. If the contractions become regular and within five minutes, then it's time to call the doctor. (Or if your water breaks.) The mucus plug might not happen until the water breaks, but I lost mine about an hour before my water broke!

well later pregnancies are supposed to go quicker and i was dilated to 3 and 80% effaced for almost 4 weeks with baby number 4......however my first i wasnt dilated at all at my checkup and delivered her 3 hours later (i loved the 1 hour labor lol) so from my experience you could deliver in an hour....or a couple weeks......the only thing im sure of is that if you are 36 weeks it will be soemtime in the next 6 weeks.

I was 3 centimeters and 100% effaced for 7 days before I gave birth. My friend was walking around at 3 for 2 weeks with her 2nd baby.

None of that tells you anything. People have stayed 2 cm dilated for weeks before delivery. I know you are excited and anxious to have it over with but the baby will come when he/she is ready!

It is really hard to say. It could be hours to days. It is not uncommon for women to be 2 or more cm dialated weeks before going into labor. Congratualtions!

You could walk around at 2 cm for four more weeks...there is no way to accurately predict when you'll go into labor.
(I know you don't want to hear this...my last four weeks were always the hardest!)
Your little one will decide when the time is right...good luck!
