Considering most people don't spend all their time reading up about medicine, or hanging out in hospitals, why are we so fascinated with medical shows as entertainment?

People are hypochondriacs and fascinated with the "what-if" questions. Could THAT really happen? (More often than not, the answer is no, but there's always freak circumstances.) Also, doctors are like rock stars. They do these imaginable things that regular folks don't understand or want to do. So they're interesting to watch, like celebrities amongst common man.

Medical Dramas On Tv

Because it's dramatic and you can do so many cool things in the confines of a medical drama; nothing ever gets boring or stale because there are thousands of diseases and injuries to have.

You'd think that since I spent all day hanging around a hospital and seeing all sorts of gross medical crap that I wouldn't like all the medical dramas, but yeah every week there I am watching Grey's Anatomy and I've been an ER fan for years.

I could do without all the million and one crime-solving dramas...between Law & Order, CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Cold Case, Numbers....I'm about to OD on cop dramas.

Another reason ( which just popped into my head ) I believe this is so is because us Humans well some of us have a fascination with the gory ailments some people come into the hospital with as well as the gory operations and how the medical team ( though just actors ) goes about treating these.
People through out history though such as Da Vinci ( Leonardo Da Vinci as well as being a painter and inventor among other things was given permission to dissect human bodies and draw the innards etc ) have always been fascinated with the inner workings of the human body and I guess most of us humans still are but then some people just like watching these programmes because of the drama or actors.

Have you noticed these things go in trends? There will be a period of several seasons with few or no medical shows, then one will come along and -- if it's any good at all -- garner an audience because it's different. Suddenly, there are tons of them, all trying to ride the coattails of a success. It goes this way with almost any genre of show. Look what's happened lately with contests and reality shows. Most of us will never do those things, either, but we watch them.

Generally, people tend to watch things we don't normally do in real life. Otherwise, we could just go sit on our front porches and watch it, without turning on the TV at all. I'd personally guess that most folks in the medical profession would rather watch cop or lawyer shows, and vice versa.

Its a combination of medical information and 'theatrical' acts - people/viewers wanna know about the medical field and get entertained and excited by the 'dramas' within. Total entertainment only comes from stories 'acted on' .

It's because of the Monkey-See, Monkey-Do attitude prevalent at the networks. If one network gets a show out there that gets good ratings, then every other network has to rush to get a show "just like it" on the air. So ER took off, then there was Chicago Hope, Grays Anatomy and House.

Someone puts a reality show on, then everyone scrambles for a reality show.

Someone puts a game show on, everyone scrambles for a game show.

There's no originality left in hollywood. Only copycats.

The give the people what they want. It has suspense, often times action, some kind of a love story, it's realistic. All that and the fact that when one show does good, everyone else has to have one of their very own to make more money. For proof of that look at all those wife swap things and stuff like that. But personally, my favorite doc show is House. It's funny, suspenseful, interesting, shocking, and the adjectives could continue...

Basically, it is for the life and death dramas. Plus almost everyone has fantasized about a good looking doctor or nurse they had at some time.
