I will be starting a new job soon where I basically try to call people in a particular industry and if they aren't happy with their current job I find out what they are looking for and find them that job, then the company who hires them pays me a 'finder's' fee. I just want to do this is a non anoying way to people, to actually help them. Any advice as to what someone could say to you in five seconds that wouldn't anoy the hell out of you?? Thanks

I've been called and been e-mailed about jobs in my industry. I prefer e-mails. While I am fairly happy in my current position, I like to see what is out there, and I store those e-mails in case I ever do want to reach a recruiter.

My husband has also been called, and he investigated some of the options offered. He was happy to get the calls at the time, as he was thinking about looking for another position.

My advice for you: when you call, tell them you have a tremendous opportunity for someone in that field, and then ask if they know any well qualified candidates who are looking for a position. They may know of others they would recommend, or they may indicate they are interested themselves. Either way, you win.

Best of luck to you!

If you explain to people that you can help them find a better job, then they shouldn't be annoyed that you called. Most people want a better job, maybe not tomorrow, but someday. If the person you are talking to is happy with their job, ask them if they know any friends who are looking for a new job.

If you sound professional and confident, then most people will treat you like a professional and with respect. If you are sincere in wanting to help people, most people will respond positively.

Many headhunters start with a job opening, and then call around to find people to fill it. That way you can describe the actual open position when you talk to people. Gives you something to talk about to break the ice.

I receive calls from headhunters all the time, and I don't find that annoying at all. It's not the same as trying to sell a product or service. Most people will be receptive to someone who wants to discuss an employment opportunity.

I am sure your new employer will have a script to use for your opening line.

I really admire you for not wanting to bother people. Recruiters can come across like used car salesmen if they aren't careful.

I think you should just be upfront with why you're calling and take "no" for an answer if they aren't interested. The annoying ones are the ones who try to keep you on the phone after you've already told them you're happy in your current position.

Good luck with your new job.
