I am in need of updating a resume. First question is how far back should I go with past employers. (My last one I was with 11 years) and secondly, is it ok to list a year of in home daycare that I did?

Go back with employers as far as there is any relevance. If you're 40 years old you probably wouldn't list part-time jobs you had in high school.

If the in-home daycare has any connection with the job you're applying for, or if it fills a gap in your resume, then go ahead and list it.

Normally you don't go back more than 10 years, if you had different positions at the same company you can list the position you had and what skills you demonstrated in that position. If you were in the same position for 11 years then you should talk about your previous employer as well if it benefits you. With resumes you want to lead with your strenghts not your weakness. If the day care was a business that you worked for yes you can put it on your resume, but you need to show that there were skills you used at that position that would directly apply to the position you are applying for now.

Seldom is going back more than 5 years necessary. If you have been with your current (last) employer for 11 years, that should be enough. Also, listing self-employment is usually o.k., too. But, if you are not currently employed, going back to the one you were with for 11 years is about the only way you can go, unless you had a major problem with them. Then I don't have advice for you, sorry. Good luck.
