The granite fabricator will have to come to your home to measure your counter. You can go to the granite importers, however; to choose your granite

If there is one thing I am certain about, is the granite fabricator will want to do his own measurements and make templates on top of the cabinets. There is no substitution for this and you should not resist this approach. Slabs of granite are about a $1,000 each say about $75 per square foot installed so a mistake in layout can be thousands of dollars. Go to fabricators and see which suppliers they use, pick you granite by picking the particular slabs that will be installed, hold on to you wallet and ask the fabricator for a price. Figure about $5K for a small kitchen. Got to have a new sink too. An underhung stainless sink with a quality faucet installed is about $1K.

Any dealer that will supply and install granite countertops will come out and do the measuring. If they don't, don't use that dealer. No reputable company will take a homeowner's word on the dimension, etc., of anything, much less something as expensive as granite.

If it were me I wouldn't buy granite. I would get some kind of solid surface top like corian. They are actully a bit better than granite in a couple of ways, 1 way is that they are cheaper than granite, 2 If you drop something heavy on granite it will chip or break where corian will not. You can also get corian to look like granite.
As for your formica tops take them off and pitch them then call a professinal to measusre and make templates of what you need that is the best way.
That way if the factory where the stuff is cut screws up they have to replace it, if you screw it up you have to buy a new peice, and that gets expensive

No. To get a truely seamless fit with granite, they need to come out and get the precise measurments. What they will do is come out and make a template made of plastic sheets with your old counter taken off. Then they will use this for cutting the granite for your new counter top. Then they will instal the new counter top and use a two part colored apoxy for the joints. Then they will scrape off the extra on the joints with a razor and polish to finish. Hope this helps. Also remember to do the yearly clean and seal.

Usually the granite supplier makes a template of plastic or heavy cardboard sheets, by an on-site fit. Remove the counter tops and have the supplier-installer come to your home to make his own template. He will want to make sure the cabinets support the weight and may have to bring the counter top in, in pieces if it will be hard to get into the kitchen. The material is so expensive it is best to let the professionals handle it. If you don't handle a granite slab properly, you can easily break it in half.

Yes you van remove the laminate contertops. Its EXSPENSIVE!!! (new granite ones!) But you cna go to your local Home Depot or Lowes (any GOOD store like that) and theyll help you find the right stuff and measurements-etc. Now IM not good witha ruler either!! Im terrible with a ruler! But if you know a trustwot=rthy person who can work with you they can do the measuring for you. I wish you all the luck in the world and remember...it IS exspensive!!! But dont be bummed-out! Im sure it will work out for ya!

Everyone who said make the installer, yeah. All others.
The key here is that the installer is not going to guarantee that it will fit your kitchen unless he measure it. The reason is that they will cut the granite to fit the slight curves in your wall. while you may have walls that are just fine, they only have about an inch or so to cover up the crack that will be left by the installer. So, if you have a bad curve in your wall, they won't be able to tell that because you have brought them a straight board to measure from
God Bless

Call a professional they will come out and measure for you. Also have you thought about just tiling over the laminate. Looks good and is a whole lot cheaper.
