Borax is made of 100% Borax, a naturally occurring mineral made up of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. Borax is not harmful to washing machines, plumbing or septic tanks and does not contain phosphates or chlorine.
In Regular Wash
Add ½ cup of Borax to each wash load along with the recommended amount of detergent.
Pre-Soaking Stains
Add one tablespoon of Borax per gallon of water or ½ cup in washer. Pre-soak for at least 30 minutes before washing.
Hard Water
Borax works wonders as a water conditioner, helping your detergent to work more effectively. Add ½ cup of Borax along with your regular laundry detergent.
Delicate Hand Washables
Dissolve ¼ cup of Borax and 1 - 2 tablespoons detergent in a tub of warm water and soak them for 10 minutes. Rinse in clear, cool water, blot with a towel, lay flat or hang to dry (away from sunlight and direct heat).
Cloth Diapers & Baby Clothes
Flush out cloth diapers and begin soaking immediately, using ½ cup Borax for each diaper pail of warm water. Follow soaking with warm wash, using the "regular wash" instructions above.
Borax is most often used as a laundry booster, but it is extremely versatile and effective as a household cleaner. In addition, Borax can be used in many different ways to reduce and control odors.

RE:
What is borax? Is it a powdered stain remover for laundry?
Is it safe for colors? How much do you use per load?

Borax is used as a whitening agent, to remove yellow discoloration from white cottons. Don't use it on colors. One half cup for a front loading washer.

It's a mineral, I think. I use it with my detergent as it's supposed to make it work better, and I put it in with the whites to help get rid of the yellowing. It doesn't seem to hurt the colors, but I don't know that it does any good either. It's pretty inexpensive, and I just pick it up at the grocery store with the laundry soap. We have very hard water and it's supposed to help with that.
