You should probably get emerald. It's one of the best pokemon games I've played in awhile. It's similar to Ruby/Sapphire except that it has a bit more features and a slightly different story. The only real difference between Firered and Leafgreen is what pokemon appear in each game. If that doesn't bother you then it really doesn't matter.
