Hungary was overrun by the Nazis on 19 March 1944; up til that time, Jews in Hungary were relatively safe & assimilated. When the Nazis came in, many Hungarians greeted them with open arms and collaborated with the Nazis. Thus there is a HUGE population of Jews who were exterminated in the last, desparate days of the fighting of WWII because of the average Hungarian's role in assisting the Nazis.

Hungray technically was nonexistent at the beginning of WWII. Prior to the war, Hitler took control of it and claimed it part of the German Empire again.
