Quoting someone isn't the same as endorsing everything they've ever said or done. You can quote Karl Marx or Adolf Hitler, if you like - it doesn't make you a commie or a Nazi, just well-read.

Though, of course, how you use the quote, rhetorically, might reveal you as such. What was the actual quote, and the context?

Yeah yet he's a socialist. The blacks do no longer suggestions a former radical KKK member being the third in command interior the Senate as long is he's a democrat and passes adequate socialism.

Forrest was, of course, a Democrat, as was the Confederacy, the KKK, Sheriff Bull Conner, and George "Segregation Forever!" Wallace.

Let's not leave out KKK Grand Kleagle Senator Robert Byrd [D-WV].

If the quote had nothing to do with the KKK and what they stand for there may be nothing wrong in quoting Gen. Forrest. If it has to do with a military matter maybe a general is who one wants to quote.

Did you know that the Ku Klux Klan was originally created to fight Republicans, not just blacks? I'm not justifying it, but just making a point that this Ted Poe guy might've not been necessarily a bigot.

Nothing until I knew what he said - just because someone may be a scumbag doesn't make everything they say or do invalid.

Well, it probably wasn't the smartest move. But he could just be ignorant and not racist.
