Because he was shot. A man (who's name I can't remember) shot Martin Luther King, Jr because he didn't like what he stood for and his effect on the people.

James Earl Ray shot him while he was standing on a balcony in Memphis. Jesse Jackson claims to have been on the balcony with him at the time, although this has been disputed. If true, it makes the murder of Dr. King even that more tragic.
