Seeing as most people start under the age of 12, most people would say that she has no chance of becoming a pro. But not many people become profesionals either. The chances of a girl starting at the age of 10 becoming a principal dancer in still very low. Many people can very well do it but it is a matter of commiting to go to a class all day every day and then having a show in the evning. If your sister is good enough, she might get a job teaching a younger class. I'm just not so sure about going pro and acually becoming a ballerina. She could of course dance the rest of her life just for fun if she really enjoys the art!

Taking salsa for a year means nothing as far as dance experience goes. Salsa is no comparison to ballet. It's like clubbing, not any harder. So you can safely assume she's starting from zero at the age of 17. Not to mention that it's harder to learn as an adult, it takes a few years (7? 10? more? ) to become a ballerina of a professional level. By the time she's good, she will be too close to the typical retirement age. Not impossible, but improbable...

Salsa is so much easier than ballet! She has a good chance with salsa or ballroom, but with ballet - very very little. She can dance and enjoy it though. People do it all the time - they try and see how far can they go.

It's essential for girls to start ballet at under 12 years old because of the joints and muscles. I think she's left it a bit to late to start ballet but there are always lots of different styles of dance to try - maybe she could try streetdance as they take in all ages, abilities and levels of fitness.
