Does college football need to abandon the BCS and move into a playoff/tournament system? I say no question it does, time for corporate america to stop making money off sport and bring it back to the game. BCS and picking #1's have went on for way too long now.

What do you think, yes or no to playoff/tournament?

You will never get a true NCAA basketball style playoff in football for several reasons. One the bowls have way too much clout and bring huge bucks to the table. You would need some large corp. or three to match or exceed what the bowls give to even get started. Two unlike recent reports most college presidents do not want any type of playoff system installed and you require there votes to get anything changed. Three while there are several different playoff systems that have been suggested (4 team, 8 team, 16 team, etc) most systems would still incorporate the polls to determine the playoff teams. How is that really any different than what we have now? Some team will still be crying foul at the end of the year. Four if you used some of the playoff systems the fans would have to travel to several neutral site games at huge expense just to see there teams play. Some other systems give home games till the semi-finals to higher ranked teams. Five tradition, tradition, tradition, and tradition again that's all that stands between all us die hard cfb fans and a real playoff. I will say this however we need a playoff system and soon the current system is a joke all the way around.

Having a playoff system will ruin all that is good about college football.

Because there are no playoffs in college football, every single game matters. Each game is importnat. Players play to win and coaches coach to win each game becuase they know one loss can mean the end of their season.
Look at the NFL- teams go 8-8 and go to the playoffs. That is ridiculous- and what is even worse, teams win their division with 4 games left in the season so they give up on the last four games because they have ntohing to gain by winning those last 4 games. Teams decide to rest their starters and render those games essentially worthless because the best guys are not playing and the teams are not affected one way or the other by wins and losses. Plus each conference gets one team in the playoffs- so if the AFC West is a horrible conference, and say the NFC central is supeb, the AFC west still gets one representative in the playoffs, but maybe that team does not deserve to be there, and maybe the NFC central really has the 2 best teams in the league, but they will not meet in the championship game. The BCS has conference alignments with the power conferences, but no one conference (PAC 10, SEC, Big 10, etc) is absolutely guaranteed at leat on representative in the BCS- the championship is set up for the most deserving teams. Look how well it has worked out the last 5 years, undefeated teams meeting up and a champion being crowned.
I agree the BCS needs to be tweaked a bit, but a playoff system in college would ruin the integrity and excitement of the game.
The BCS and Bowl system is not just about corporate sponsors, they are about traditions and conference match-ups to ascertain whose conference is stronger.

Of course they should have a playoff. The BCS bowl games could be incorporated into the tournament. The other bowl games can still be played just as they are now. I don't want to hear the excuse about missing class time, because every other NCAA football division has a playoff. Every other sport has a tournament also. Football is a game played once a week, not two or three times like baseball or basketball. I don't think anyone can come up with a compelling reason as to why there shouldn't be a playoff.

Playoff would seemingly be the better way for obvious reasons of playing the best against the best, but then again how many teams should make it? 4? 8? 8 teams means 3 extra games for the two BCS teams which means more stats, which makes a 14-0 or 13-1 season. Very big bonus for winning huh? Or 4 teams? Someone will be left out AGAIN. Really college fb will always have imperfections. I rather enjoy the BCS right now and its definitely better than no BCS.

I think it would be weird seeing a playoff system in college football, but I think I'd get used to it after a couple years. I like waiting for the rankings and seeing who moved up and down but you can still do that with a playoff system. Like one of the other guys said, use the bowl games as the playoff games and work up to a national championship game where no one can argue the team earned it. And maybe not even do it by rankings but by division leaders. Like the Rose Bowl. It's usually always the Big Ten champs vs. the Pac-10 champs. You don't need to change that. Set up every big Bowl that way, add a couple others in there and you're all set. With playoffs and bowl games both holding hands together.

Every division in college football uses a playoff system except division 1. There is no excuse for it. They could have their bowl games, making money for the corporate sponsors, but use the bowl games as part of the playoff system. The current BSC system is a joke and makes a mockery of claiming a so called national champion.

The best way for college football to really succeed is to take the NFL approach. They need to get rid of the conferences and make divisions with equal amounts of teams. From there, you have a handful of inter-division games to help determine wildcards. Then, the winners of each division got into a tournament.

What we want and whats reasonable are two entorely different things. Yes I would like playoffs but conferences have spent too much time, money and effort in to their bowls and they, obviously, dont want to give them up. Why would Pac 10 and Big10 give up the rose bowl... they have worked hard to make it the bowl that it is.

As a Gator Fan...we need a playoff. It's not going to happen, but we need one. At least 8 teams.
