Me and my wife were debating weather or not clams were alive when you buy them at the store or not. She said that they were alive, and I thought that they were already dead. Does anyone know?

Fresh clams should be live when purchased. You can tell by a lack of fishy smell and if they are live they will keep their shells closed when you handle them. If a store won't allow you to touch and smell a clam or oyster, it's time to find a new store because that one is hiding something fishy :) Even clams displayed in air on ice should be live, they can live this way for several days, up to a week properly cared for. Here's a link that can help you pick out the best of the best at the store:

Hope that helps

Normally sold alive in water or frozen. Alive if you watch them they will move and squirt water every now and again. quite funny to watch if you have the time. Have a few videos of it on my camera.

Usually if they are dead, something was wrong with them or the way they were handled. They could also be old too and probably wouldn't taste as good. Paella sounds really good right now!

Depends on where you buy them. If you buy them at a fresh seafood market and they are in ice.......they are dead. If they are in water they are alive.

Yes, they are alive, otherwise there would be a risk of food poisoning.
