Assuming you mean in your own home, You need a broadband connection, wireless router and a wireless network adapter on your laptop.
If you want to connect outside your home, you can get a wireless data card through your cell phone provider and pay for data service. This approach would work for a connection at home as well as anywhere you get a wireless signal from a cell tower.

You need a wireless card (NIC) for your computer/laptop and you also need a router which is to be connected to your modem. Sometimes, there are modem and router combos, also known as gateways. If you have XP, you can use the wireless setup wizard to configure your connection.
Hope that helps. :)
