By the way, the 403 is an Oldsmobile engine. Buick made a 400 and 401, however.

But why not keep it all-Pontiac?

The other guys are also right, but i have 'unfroze' engines that have layed up a long time by: removing all the sparkplugs and having a 50/50 mixture of gasoline and engine oil.Dumping some of this mixture down each cylinder and letting set overnite. The next day I removed the 'inspection pan' and pryed the engine loose at the flywheel with a bar that fit into the teeth.Back then I used jackhandles as I have done this many times.Once the engine frees up, spin engine over by way of the starter with the plugs still out.Blowing out any excess mixture.Be sure to change oil and filter before attempting to start.Check old oil for blown head gasket by pouring some on something hot.If it 'bubbles up' you need new head gaskets. If it just burns and smokes away, your alright. Reading those engine sizes sure takes me back some years.

1st question check the bolt pa tern on both trans if they are the same it should fit OK. Pontiac used a trans called a slim jim and is the only one of it's kind. 2nd you should remove both heads from the motor and see if you can turn the motor, check all cyl. walls for cracks or scoring if you can. Get the cyl. heads checked for cracks and surfacing, a machine shop can do all that and get those heads back in good shape if they are not cracked. 3rd Yes your 389 CID parts will interchange. However you still need to get the heads checked out and put them back in good shape. Check to see if you have water in your oil, If you do your may have a cracked cyl. wall. The block may have frozen and cracked the block. If the motor has been sitting idle for a long period of time the rings are most likely frozen and collapsed so you won't have very much compression, there is allot that can be wrong. Best suggestion i can make is pull the motor out and go through it completely and it in good running condition. You have less head aches in the future. Good Luck!!

First thing is to never reuse a head gasket. It is not worth it, and it probably wouldn't last that long either. Get a new one. I'm sure there are a lot of parts that will swap from the 59 to the 60.

If the engine is that tight then go ahead and pull it and have it rebuilt. At a minimum have the cylinders honed and put in new rings. Check out the crankshaft also. That may need journals turned, and larger bearings. good luck
